20 steps… an experiment

The basis of my work as an artist is the connection between art and nature, between the artistic action and the experimental work. This means that my artistic production which is fundamentally based on natural principals and measures is nothing more than a sequence of experimental steps which implies given and objective criteria and subjective factors in the same way.

On the one hand my work is based on events in nature and civilization as well as on communication with colleagues of other disciplines. The dual pole nature - art is for me not only the basis of my experience but at the time also my central theme. My main interest is directed to the perception of space, time, distances and proportion and forms the synthesis between art and nature which implies in the end a dialogue between man and nature. I mainly understand land-art as a kind of laboratory, a ground for experiments for aesthetic-artistic, political and ecological syntheses.

In my project ’20 steps around the globe…’ for instance the earth replaces the canvas. Our blue planet is the carrier of my artistic work being integrated into the creative process only by minimal changes. In the context of this work an arbitraily defined route around the earth is divided systematically and exactly into 20 segments which develop to a dynamic, logarthmic progression according to the ‘Golden Section’. The 20 steps are being visualised by using an installation of 20 stainless-steel elements around the globe, precisely located on continents and countries. The location of the points is achieved by using the computer and satellite navigation.

The starting point of ’20 steps around the globe…’ can be placed in very point on this planet. The spectator can perceive the first 10 elements and produce in this way the highest density (in the sense of Clifford Geertz). At the same time one must point out: Neither the artist nor the audience can ever see this project in its total. But this point is not debatable. It is not the point to see more or less but to peceive the world in a new and different way. ’20 steps around the globe…’ means a mythological journey which are two things: an adventure and an interdisciplinary expedition into noman’s land between the borders of science, philosophy and religion. Last but not least it is this principle of crossing the boarders which holds the experimental charm of this project.
